Police caution against letting people into your home

The public must be extra careful about whoever they welcome into their houses.

The Norwood Police Station has issued a statement warning people not to let anyone inside their homes even if they claim they are working for the SABC.

Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station, says there is a syndicate of armed robbers pretending to work for the SABC. They claim to be inspecting homes to check the number of televisions and to verify licences.

“It is allegedly three men who are dressed in suits. They might be driving a car with a SABC sign to make you believe they are legit but these men are dangerous. It is a major concern to our residents.”

He advises calling the police or local private sector security to ensure their safety.

Mmoni Seapolelo, the spokesperson for the SABC, said they are aware of reports of people acting as TV licence inspectors.

“The corporation would like to put it on record that it has not embarked on any process to conduct physical inspections of TV licences or TV sets in South African households or business premises.”

Seapolelo appeals to the public to never allow such people to access their premises and urges them to contact the nearest police station to report the perpetrators.
