WATCH: Nehawu protest outside Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital

Nehawu chairperson, Wanda Pendu says the reason for the protest action is that they are barely able to survive on their current salaries.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union(Nehawu) are protesting outside Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Parktown demanding a wage increment on March 8.

The Nehawu protest is spreading like wildfire throughout the country.

Nehawu chairperson, Wanda Pendu has expressed his grievances to the Gazette.

“We are here at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to strike and are withdrawing our labour because of the arrogant employer who forces the 3% wage increase on our workers without it being signed and accepted by anyone. Over and above that, the very same employer took us to court and did not honour the last leg of the 2018 resolution. We’re saying since they’re setting the wrong precedents, they must honour their agreement. Whatever government does affects other sectors. When they became arrogant and gave us 3%, it means they undermined the quality bargaining process, which means unions are not seen or respected.”

“The 3% they gave us compared to what government officials receive is nothing and whatever is happening also affects our children in universities because we cannot afford to pay for their fees and that’s why we’re calling all the workers in government to support our cause,” he concluded.

There was high police visibility with authorities from the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) monitoring the situation at the hospital.

Our reporter approached multiple supporters and strikers but they refused to comment to The Gazette citing the fear of victimisation.
