Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner to play in South Africa’s highest women’s soccer league

Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner joined a soccer club at the age of six and constantly proved herself due to playing with boys.

Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner, Anneliese Hindelang is the youngest goalkeeper to join the highest SA women’s soccer league, Hollywoodbets SA Super League.

Hindelang said she was proud of herself and honoured to be part of the super league.

“It has been a goal of mine, but actually playing for the U17 national team was my first goal, which I had to give up as you need a permanent residency, which I don’t have. Playing in the Hollywoodbets team was a goal that seemed rather unreachable, but here I am now, and I was told that at 15 I am the youngest in the team as well also the only German to play in the league.”

The 15-year-old explained that she began playing at the age of five with her brother and joined her first club at the age of six.

The DSJ learner said she realised at the age of 13 that she enjoyed the sport and could turn it into a sport she could take seriously.

“I played with boys throughout my career, and I always had to prove myself. I only realised that I was talented when I joined Wits juniors and I would have been good enough to play in the Gauteng Development League team.”

Hindelang noted that her being the youngest on the team didn’t put her under additional pressure and she felt confident in the team and the support among the players.

She concluded that her plans after high school included going back to Germany and furthering her studies and continuing to play soccer, hopefully in a high division team.
