Freedom to move around for albino Burmese python

The largest snake species at the Johannesburg Zoo was moved to a new enclosure to allow it more freedom of movement.

There is nothing more exciting than moving into a new space or home. The albino Burmese python at the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo moved to its new enclosure on February 2.

The fifteen-year-old python came into the Joburg Zoo on July 10, 2013, and was born in captivity.

Mlando Dlomo, the reptile curator at the Zoo, said as the snake got bigger over the years, its old house was simply becoming too small with not enough space for it to move around.

“We moved the snake to the bigger enclosure so it can have freedom of movement in a bigger space.”

Dlomo said a few minutes after they had moved the snake, it was seen exploring and enjoying its new environment, which has a dam where it can swim and drink water.

“We feed her five full chickens or five full rabbits, and she eats every second week in summer and once a month in winter, and like other reptiles, she is less active in the winter, so digestion takes time.”

He said that she clearly loves her new space.
