Sandringham Police Station stands up against GBV

Sandringham Police Station and stakeholders took the gender-based violence campaign to an informal settlement at Organic Market on the border of the Alexander community.

To educate people about violence towards women and children during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, Sandringham Police Station hosted an awareness event at Organic Market.

Stakeholders of various organisations participated including Sandringham CPF, Sandringham Police Station victim empowerment room, Community Security Organization, Community Active Patrol, Fidelity ADT, Union of Jewish Women of Johannesburg (UJW), ZSS security, Fire Ops, and community members.

Tzipporach Berman of the Sandringham CPF said last year she had attended multiple GBV campaigns during the 16 days of activism, and there was a lot of preaching and not enough information on how to handle life-threatening situations.

“I wanted to do something completely different and something that we haven’t seen before, and this event would not have been possible without the help of our stakeholders and generous donors,” she said.

Berman added next year they aimed to go bigger and keep making sure they kept women and children safe and empowered.

The event included a live interactive self-defence demonstration for women and children to teach them how to defend themselves in a life-threatening situation, and Renée Colthman of Fidelity ADT addressed attendees on crime awareness and safety tips.

“We ended the campaign with live music from DJ Daniel Kanor who donated his time to do the music. He said he felt honoured to be a part of such a worthy cause and hopes to keep coming to the events. He was so humbled to see the children dancing and having a wonderful time,” said Berman.

She expressed her gratitude to UJW Johannesburg which donated 100 care packages to the girls and women in attendance as well as Freshfellas which donated oranges as a healthy snack for all.

Berman concluded that in the new year, they will carry on working with their stakeholders to keep empowering women and children.
