The Wanderers Club opened six new padel courts.
The club’s general manager Sonja Shear said, “We’re now thrilled to provide a home to padel, one of South Africa’s and the world’s newest and fastest growing sports.”
Sheer added the sport combined tennis and squash in a fast-paced game.
“We’ve long offered both original sports and foresee a huge interest in padel across all age groups. The Wanderers Club is bringing a game with immense family entertainment to our venue.”
Wanderers Club’s centre manager Paul Atkinson said, “Padel is played in a doubles or singles format with mixed doubles proving the most sociable and popular. Scoring is adopted from padel’s older cousin, tennis, but serves are made underhand from hip height.
“To play, there’s an application people can download called Playtomic which will ask questions to gauge how well one knows the game. It’s a worldwide app which ranks you from 0 to 5 the more you play and create a record. You can play worldwide with people within your ranking where the sport is offered. Through that, you can book a time and court of your choice.”
Padel player Tracy Mulville said she would return to play another game of padel at the club.
“It was such fun. I enjoyed playing the game although it was difficult to get the ball off the glass nonetheless it was good.”
Padel enthusiast Paul Anderson said, “It’s an extremely sociable sport but allows your competitive spirit to come out. Being outdoors and physical, it’s a great way to stay fit.”
