First functional greenhouse in South Africa launched at mall in Rosebank

We Are Egg department store in Rosebank is host to the Anea greenhouse where Anea presented their terrarium products.

The first-ever greenhouse built in a mall in South Africa was launched successfully at We Are Egg, The Zone in Rosebank.

Founded by Denny Mo, artisanal terrarium creator Anea launched its products inside a custom, conservatory-styled greenhouse on September 30. Terrariums are transparent enclosures in which plants are grown.

Clients can purchase these terrariums and take them back to Anea for replanting.

Mo said he had been creating terrariums for the past 10 years. “This is the first time we have opened the first greenhouse in a mall in South Africa. This is a functional greenhouse with controlled humidity and temperature and the only way I can bring my terrariums up here as I am based in Cape Town. I am thankful for the We Are Egg department store which partnered with us to create it. A lot of work has gone into this.”

The ‘huge lover of nature’ said, “I realised while staying in Joburg that this stuff [plants] doesn’t stay alive because of the dry humidity and heat. So, I started with glass jars and kept them inside as I could choose the humidity level in this way. Once I did that I stepped into the geometric shapes.”

The automated greenhouse contains desert woodland and tropical terrariums.

Mo said for him it wasn’t a business but a passion and project which he loved. He said all plants were sourced locally and the products were handmade by local people from Khayelitsha in Cape Town to empower them.

His partner based in Johannesburg, Howard Ahhon said the automated greenhouse contained desert woodland and tropical terrariums.

“The whole idea with these terrariums is that they’re inside a glass which keeps the humidity in. It’s like a small greenhouse that fits into your home and can be hung on the wall,” said Ahhon.
He added the terrariums were ideal for the Joburg weather because of the dryness and being so high above sea level.
“If you look after them well and understand your plants, they will thrive.”

He said, unfortunately, plants died over time so Anea also provided a replanting service to its clients.
