The South African Post Office has reported that more than 37 000 vehicle licence discs have been renewed nationally, most of them in Gauteng, following the launch of its online renewal portal.
According to the national postal service, many of the initial problems with the portal have been resolved and the system is now working efficiently.
“The SA Post Office has seen a healthy uptake for its facility for the online renewal of motor vehicle licences which it launched at the end of January 2022,” said spokesperson Johan Kruger.
Through the portal, the full renewal process, including payment, can be done online. The physical licence disk can be collected from a post office branch, selected by the customer, or delivered to the customer at a fee of R75.
Secure payments are done through the Masterpass app, available on both Android and Apple devices.
Due to a turnaround time of 10 days, customers are urged to start the renewal process before the end of the month.
“The documents required when you renew your licence at a post office branch have to be uploaded for the online renewal – a certified copy of the car owner’s ID and a proof of address no older than three months.
“The customer will receive an SMS when the disc arrives at the destination Post Office for collection or when it goes out for delivery.”
The online portal does not replace the current renewal service in place at selected post offices.
