Dog handler chases lost dog from Oaklands to Houghton

A lost dog without a chip was found by a JollyWalker dog walker who managed to rescue it after chasing it on the M31 freeway.

A two-hour chase resulted in the rescue of a lost dog, without a chip, on Glenhove Road in Houghton Estate.

Dog walker/handler Ian Dube from JollyWalker Pet Services narrated how he saw the young mixed breed walking in the middle of the road as he was driving on the M31 freeway, Oaklands side on August 19.

“I immediately parked the car on the road and turned hazards on. As I tried to catch it, the dog ran off and I chased after it. Other people joined in helping chase it and we eventually caught up with it on Glenhove Road, Houghton.”

In the process, Dube lost his phone, however, JollyWalker managing director Kim Dare said they all chipped in to help him purchase a new phone.

Dare said that Dube has been with the pet services based in Johannesburg for almost a year. “He is very experienced and can handle dogs of all shapes and sizes. To work for JollyWalker one must love dogs unconditionally.

Dog walker/handler from JollyWalker Ian Dube is commended for rescueing a lost dog on the freeway.

“Ian loves dogs and has worked with them for years. Therefore, I am very sure it is this love which drove him to help save the lost dog. Without Ian, this dog would surely have perished. He is the type of person who will always go out of his way to help people and animals and always with a smile. Ian really is a remarkable human being, and we are blessed to have him on our team.”

She added that over the years they have picked up many lost dogs. “We usually take the lost dogs to a nearby vet who will check for a chip and hopefully the owners’ details are up-to-date.
“Quite often the details are out of date which makes finding the owner very hard and so sad for the dog concerned.”

Dare urged owners to check the details on their dogs’ chips. “People move and don’t think about updating the details on the microchip and so sometimes dogs get out of the property and never get back to their real owners. In the case of this male dog – he was not microchipped.”

The dog had been taken to a vet in the area.
