Joburg mayor debunks MMC reshuffle rumours

Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse said rumours of a mayoral committee reshuffle are false and instead an attempt to instil distrust within the municipal structure.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse reaffirmed that rumours of a reshuffle of the mayoral committee and a “purge” of some metro officials are false.

In a statement on August 28, Phalatse debunked the rumours of a reshuffle, calling them “another attempt by political opponents” to disrupt the work of repairing and rebuilding the city.

“These reports and their drivers are part of a disinformation campaign that seeks to sow disunity and distrust among coalition partners, who work daily in service of the City of Johannesburg’s 6-million residents.”

She added that such false information was aimed to create a culture of fear, division and frustration among the executive, legislature, core administration and entities.

“Where there is corruption and maladministration this will be acted against without fear or favour, and in line with legal prescripts, not the whims of individuals.

“This multi-party government has every intention of changing Joburg for the better, and completing the work of repairing and rebuilding the City – work we intend on doing until our term in office is complete.”
