Local baker Nicole Ngondo on the move to growth

Local entrepreneur shares her small-scale baking business journey.

What was once a little girl’s dream has now turned out to be reality.

A proud mother of two children, Nicole Ngondo, who loves cooking, has finally found both her feet and the confidence to expand her baking business.

Nine years as a pastry chef and starting a small-scale baking business with no capital injection was one of the challenges she faced.

Today, with a shop that has been running for four months, she said it had been a learning curve.

With the hope of expanding her shop, the 34-year-old said her love for cooking and sweet things led her to have an idea to infuse black cultural food with baked goods.

According to Ngondo, this was a way to promote and be creative as a small-scale business entrepreneur and to show that the African side can mix with the western side.

“I wanted to do something that would unite all the nice sweet baked goodies and the traditional health foods because I had not seen anyone who had done a deli that included the baking section and the tradition section.”

The entrepreneur added that her shop primarily specialised in brownies and cookies but the Death by Chocolate cake was one of her most popular cakes.

She would love people to come and try her Death by Chocolate cake, Madagascan vanilla, Mogudu, Inhloko, and Umleqwa at her shop in Wrenrose Court Centre.

“Baking is not just a hobby, it is something that if you take seriously, it will bring a decent amount of money to the table.”
