Rosebank Library hosts dialogue beneficial for women

Motho ke Motho ka batho Foundation exposes learners to career opportunities.

In light of Women’s Month, Motho ke Motho ka Batho Foundation hosted a dialogue around discovering opportunities for women on August 11.

The Rosebank Library hosted stakeholders from the Department of Employment and Labour, Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the Gauteng Legislature.

Founder of Motho ke Motho ka batho Foundation Miriam Saku said the foundation decided to do things differently this year for girls and women.
“Due to the effects of Covid-19, we decided to do things differently in our foundation through the talk today. We have sourced the best speakers from different sectors and hope their information will be beneficial to you this Women’s Month.”

Saku added the foundation was established in 2012 to help learners from townships.

“The foundation is a youth development programme for grades 9, 10 and 11. It was established in 2012 and help children with careers because most of the learners in townships are not exposed to opportunities and careers.”

Member of Parliament Heinrich Giovanni April added it was important to understand the observation of Women’s Day.

“Women’s Day must not be celebrated but commemorated and when we commemorate it, it must be commemorated in a way that honours the women who paid the price for the day to be significant. Until a time comes when a woman is not seen as a female, but as a fellow human being there is always going to be the inconsistency in how women are treated.”

Part of the discussions involved representatives from different sectors of the state who spoke about the type of work they do.

CCMA Advocate Nomsa Mbileni spoke about the importance of employers speaking up about unfair labour practices at work places.

“The CCMA is an institution where you can go to due to unfair working conditions. We have a lot of legislations and organisations so that we don’t have to endure difficult situations that have been happening to women, especially, in the past.”
