Concerns were raised by residents regarding two dangerous drives that intersect in Saxonwold. One resident posted on a community group about a ‘smash’ on the corner of Cotswold and Saxonwold drives which had taken place on 30 June.
The resident added this was a notorious corner with a number of accidents over the years, to which other residents in the comments section agreed to. Although residents had apparently fixed the damaged traffic sign a day after the smash, questions were asked on the chances of control measures that could be put in place to avoid future damage.
The Saxonwold Parkview Residents Association (SAPRA) shared that there is a long process for getting traffic calming from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). You have to get a petition going.
This is from JRA:
Any applicant wishing to apply for traffic calming (speed humps), must submit an application via one of the following two processes:
1. A petition registered with the petitions committee at the speaker’s office. (City funded – but will take many years as there is a backlog of thousands of requests). You can use a mix of online and physical forms.

2. Alternately, any self-funded application can be submitted directly to the JRA, with the following supporting documentation:
- Traffic safety audit (feasibility study)
- Signed community and or business support
- Ward councillor’s support (official letter)
- A letter of support from the City of Johannesburg’s regional director’s office
- A supporting letter and/ or enforcement statistics from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department
- A speed bump costs around R20 000 and a circle over R100 000 (2022).
The above documents must be submitted to the JRA Traffic Engineering Division. All applications are assessed in accordance with the city’s Traffic Calming Policy.
