Laura Helling selected for World Science Scholars programme

A local high school learner earns a spot in an international one-year programme because of her maths skills.

A Parktown High School for Girls learner is raising the school flag high in science and mathematics.

Laura Helling, in Grade 9, has been accepted into the World Science Scholars programme which is an international initiative run by the World Science Festival.

The programme is for international high school learners with extraordinary mathematical talent, and it provides them with an unparalleled opportunity to apply their abilities to unexplored disciplines.

According to Lauren Rens, science teacher at Parktown Girls, the programme is guided by world-renowned experts and scholars who investigate how advanced mathematics skills can be used to solve complex problems in a variety of multidisciplinary fields.

“According to the programme archives, Laura is the first student ever to be selected from South Africa and we wish her a meaningful and enriching year as she participates in this learning community,” Rens added.

Laura said her love for problem solving grew when she participated in other maths programmes and competitions, and she was currently working through previous courses and interviews hosted by the World Science Festival to stay up to date with their work.

“I am excited to meet other students from around the world and get to work with them while also networking with the professors who host the courses. This is a great opportunity and definitely will be a worthwhile chance for me.”
