Tertiary students praise youth empowerment initiative for work skills

The International Youth Foundation developed effective programmes that address youth employability challenges.

Africa’s youth employment challenges are being tackled by youth empowerment initiatives.

In a statement shared by Anusha Naicker, International Youth Foundation (IYF) country manager, the foundation has developed internationally benchmarked and effective programmes that address youth employability challenges by providing sustainable opportunities for Africa’s youth.

Thato Moorosi, a business management student at Boston Media House in Rosebank was grateful to be part of the foundation.

“I received an opportunity like other students to do an online course which is beneficial to me because this experience enhanced my skills in IT. I also facilitate other students which helped me interact more and be able to address large crowds of people,” he said.

Naicker added the idea was inspired by the thought of inclusive learning.

“IYF’s Skills for Life programme is dedicated to providing foundational interpersonal skills that promote educational equity. Racism, homophobia and misogyny remain omnipresent hurdles in the quest for socio-economic equality.”

Moorsi added IYF was a necessary initiative for students.

“I think it should continue helping other students. This opportunity equips students with work-related skills that we are not exposed to in tertiary institutions.”

According to the statement, since it is Youth Month, the Skills for Success programme is celebrating its first cohort of 192 graduates, an outstanding achievement which led to a continued partnership with Google.

Naicker added, “IYF’s Skills for Success initiative is affording young people in Africa the opportunity to complete the internationally recognised Google IT Professional Certificate. This is with the objective of further growing Africa’s rapidly expanding technology industry and the advent of the fourth industrial revolution.

“In partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training, working in TVET colleges across South Africa, Skills for Life provides lecturers with the tools and training to better equip learners with fundamental life skills and enhanced technical teaching and learning.”
