WATCH: Soweto residents march to the mayor’s office

If going to town, avoid corner of Joubert Street and Empire Road Braamfontein.

Soweto residents gathered in their numbers at Pieter Roos Park in Braamfontein on June 21, to hand over a memorandum of demands to the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse.

Leading the march is Nhlanhla Lux of ‘Soweto Parliament’ accompanied by armed private security with large visibility of the SAPS and JMPD.

According to Lux, the memorandum outlines basic service delivery, including electricity crises.

“We are bringing our grievances to the mayor’s office We are here to remind her that she is the leader of the people, and whatever our people are going through – she needs to be the part and parcel of the process of finding solutions that will take our people and the community forward.”

The chairperson of One National Community Safety Association, Teboho Modise, said they are providing security to the community to hand the memorandum to the mayor and they are working with law enforcement.

“We do not want anything crime related to happen, already in Soweto, we left other members to watch, and here in town we brought members to assist law enforcement ” Teboho explained.

It is a peaceful protest so far, no incidents have been reported and the mayor is expected to receive the memorandum.
