St David’s Marist Inanda paddlers excel

A number of St Davids Marist Inanda learners recently did well in the first training marathon in anticipation of the Gauteng Marathon Championships.

St David’s Marist Inanda paddlers recently excelled in the first training marathon event, showing their commitment to qualify for the Gauteng Marathon Championships.

“Gauteng is hosting a series of marathon races leading up to the Gauteng Marathon Championships, where the team to represent the province at the SA Marathon Championships will be selected,” said Gauteng Canoe Union media liaison Jennie Dallas.

The first marathon, a K1 race (kayak, one person), took place a Homestead Dam in Benoni including all age groups from U8 to the great grand masters (65 years and over) with varying distances.

“Marathon canoe races include portages, take the canoe out of the water and run for a short distance and put back in as this is one of the tricky parts of canoeing, and when you are possibly likely to tip over and fall in so practice in these manoeuvres are vital.”

St David’s Marist Inanda paddlers performed phenomenally, staying with the winning bunch throughout the race.
Luke Salmon (U18) finished in fifth overall with a time of 01:35:00 against the winner’s time of 01:33:00.

In the U16 category, Theo Dreyer finished in a time of 01:39:00 while Bruno Cochrane finished in 01:40:00.

In the U14 category Daniel van Eeden completed the 8km (no portages suitable for this age group) in a time of 00:46.59, followed by Matthew Charter in second place (00:46:50).

The Gauteng Marathon Championships will take place at Victoria Lake Canoe Club, Germiston Lake on May 28 and 29.
