Hand-outs are not enough

Beneficiaries of a charity from Norwood and surrounds seek more than hand-outs.

Residents from Norwood, Orange Grove, Houghton and surrounds are receiving a ‘hand-up’. In an initiative launched by Noah Can in December last year, a number of residents attended a workshop at the Paterson Park Recreation Centre Hall in Norwood.

During their third workshop since inception, held on May 17, workshop facilitator Rick Ed said Noah Can was established to respond to the lockdown crisis through the handing out of aid in form of food parcels.

“Some people say they don’t just want handouts but rather want to take the initiative of their own being, therefore, we provide them with the knowledge and information they need to do so.

“These workshops aim to empower individuals to sustain themselves and make a living on their own.”

He said each season’s workshop is about 20 weeks. “People sometimes want to establish or grow a business that is already there. They sometimes don’t know how to do so or don’t have the knowledge on how to formalise their business so we provide them with the know-how.”

Ed added that there were lots of individuals who contribute their expertise on certain business subjects toward the workshops. “We assist with businesses such as care-giving, cooking, car washes, chesa nyama, creative use of hands and more. We’re expecting 25 people today and member numbers vary from time to time.

We are always open for community members to attend and once they complete these programmes, they are put in connection with networks for business support.”
