Provincial and district police make arrests

Johannesburg district commissioner urges residents to refrain from drinking and driving.

The Johannesburg District Commissioner Major General Max Masha urged residents of Johannesburg to refrain from drinking and driving.

This came after 777 suspects were arrested during various operations over the weekend of May 15.

Among other offences, 25 suspects were arrested for drunken driving during Operation Okae Molao in the Hillbrow policing precinct on the night of May 15.

According to corporate communications Captain Jeff Phora, the arrests came as a result of commitment by members from various law enforcement entities within the Johannesburg district and the Gauteng province at large which include crime prevention, sector policing, detectives and collaboration between law enforcement agencies such as the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic, various private security entities and Tracker.

Rape, robbery, grievous bodily harm assault, common robbery and also under the Domestic Violence Act, pointing of firearm, housebreaking and theft, dealing in drugs, shoplifting, possession of suspected stolen property, drunken driving, fraud, theft out of motor vehicle, dealing in liquor without licence and liquor none-compliance are some of the charges suspects would be facing.

Phora said, “All suspects are expected to appear before different magistrate courts soon and the operation continues.”
