Kingsmead Book Fair set to transport readers to other worlds

Book Fair to be held at Kingsmead College in Melrose will offer a range of stimulating talks and debates for readers of all ages.

Reading allows us to move from one world to another. One can immerse yourself in the lives of fictional characters and learn about a culture that is different from our own by reading between the pages of a book.

Kingsmead College is hosting its 10th annual book fair on May 21 in partnership with Standard Bank-Wealth and Investment and Timberland.

The Kingsmead Book Fair is a celebration of literature and learning. Over the years it has earned its reputation as a significant event on the literary calendar by featuring prominent local and international authors who discuss current book themes and genres with readers in interactive sessions.

Lindy-Lou Alexander, head of brand and marketing, consumer and high net worth at Standard Bank, said they have been sponsoring the Kingsmead Book Fair since 2018. “The literacy rate in South Africa is very low; just under four million adults have a low literacy rate, even after 26 years of democracy.”

She said the book fair is a fantastic way to promote literacy and reading, which is why Standard Bank joined hands with Kingsmead College.

“The book fair is a whole-day fair where we invite authors to come and discuss their books. It is also a family day which is open to the public to come and enjoy the day, by listening to and engaging with authors explaining their favorite books.

“It is also for people who are interested in writing, and that is why Kingsmead College has extended and opened up a competition for young writers.”
