Support sought for launch of pilot reading programme

The programme is envisioned to be a form of youth empowerment.

A local company does not only provide services in the metering industry but has an outreach department which aims to touch people’s lives.
Meter Mate Metering based in Parkwood has an outreach department run by staff volunteers.

Emma Nelani of Meter Mate Metering said their mission was to touch lives in a way that would uplift, empower, educate and feed people. She said the outreach team focused primarily on aiding two beneficiaries, one of which is based in Parktown, Lefika la Phodiso.

Their major project for 2022 was to launch a much-needed pilot reading programme that they want to encourage as a form of youth empowerment. To do this, Meter Mate has devised an incentive programme that will encourage children and parents alike to become more involved. Currently, all fundraising would be directed towards financing this incentive programme.

The programme will incentivise ‘volunteens’ (teenage volunteers) who are currently helping younger children with their reading at an aftercare centre thus helping to create and build listening and reading skills.

Nelani said if funds permitted, the programme would also be used to motivate parents to become more involved in the facility that provides their children with free therapeutically aligned aftercare.
