Freedom of fun

Various sports disciplines comprised the fun day celebrations.

Celebrations were indeed fun and carefree for the youth as they celebrated Freedom Day at the Orange Grove Park. Chairperson of Curious Youth Group Shane Ndlovu said they wanted to celebrate the heroes who fought for their freedom.

“Our group, founded by Ma’am Ouma Khasu, aims to unleash young talent, support young children in art, sports, culture, music and drama.
“Therefore, we celebrated the day in form of sports.”

Ndlovu added that the group also aims to acquire guidance and support from elders as, ‘young people need prayer, financial assistance, love and care. We all know that as young people we go through depression, anxiety and so on thus, we need to make the right choices and connect with the right people’.

The group which holds activities in local areas like Norwood, Houghton, Killarney and Balfour Park hopes for support toward pioneering a reading programme.

Local author and social activist Mongi Maphipha said he was invited by Curious Youth Group and Ghetto Snobs for a fun-filled day at the park. He said the two groups collaborate most of the time.

Maphipha said sport activities of the day included soccer, basketball and netball with youths under 18 dominating the activities. “I played the role of inspiring the youth. I didn’t want to talk about the usual drugs and unemployment.

“As an author, I shared educational tips with them on how to structure content and present it on social media in a way that will attract viewers, supporters and sponsors. It was basically content management. Young people need our support as adults and that motivates them.”
