The Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based at Emmarentia Dam, hosted a surf ski race on April 2 featuring paddlers from areas including Parktown, Rosebank, Craighall and surrounds.
Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said, “Numerous paddlers enjoy cruising down to the coast to participate in surf ski races in the ocean, and we wish we had an ocean in Gauteng to enjoy the wonderful paddling sensation of waves.”
Dallas said some years ago the club began the High Altitude Surf Ski Race which had become extremely popular.
Paddlers participated on stand up paddleboards as well as surf ski boats meant for ocean paddling while organisers arranged motorboats or jet skis to cruise around the dam to create ‘waves’.
The distances that paddlers could enter included 10km and 7km stand up paddleboard races as well as a 3km fun stand-up paddle social event.
The event was not an official race so no race times were recorded, however, the 10km event was led by the Euro Steel team with well-known and internationally recognised top paddlers from South Africa including Hank and Pippa McGregor from KwaZulu-Natal in the mixed double and Craighall Park resident Wayne Jacobs and Ricci Talevi in the men’s double.
