Junior mayor at your service

City’s junior council joined by the local learner.

A King David High School Linksfield learner was appointed junior mayor in the Johannesburg Junior Council.

Ricci Waksman (16) who is in Grade 11 was formally inducted in March.

“Upon learning the news, I felt overwhelmed with happiness and excitement, and was extremely grateful to be given this amazing opportunity,” she said. She added that schools elected two learners to represent them in the Johannesburg Junior Council and then elections were held to vote for the mayors and other executive positions.

Ricci said her role included leading the council for her term. “This includes overseeing and assisting with the organising and planning of various events, initiatives and projects run by the committees, as well as establishing ones of our own.”

She said she balanced her schoolwork and her new role through time management and good planning. “I believe that there is always time for the things that are important to you, you just have to make it.”

Ricci who has attended King David Linksfield since Grade R said her favourite subjects were maths and information technology, and she loved dancing, public speaking and first aid.

Ricci said she would not pursue a similar career after she completed school and wanted to study medicine which is ‘grounded on similar values, such as helping others’.
