Parkview Police Station Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Daureen Nonyane wished residents a safe Easter season.
He thanked residents, the Community Policing Forum, community patrollers, security companies and other stakeholders for their contribution to the fight against crime.
The spokesperson for the station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said they would conduct a number of disruptive operations and awareness campaigns within the policing precinct as Easter approached.
Nonyane urged residents to get involved in crime-fighting initiatives including involvement in the Community Policing Forum.
Parkview SAPS also shared the following safety tips for residents:
- Do not leave your house unattended but rather ask neighbours or relatives to watch over it
- Stop all deliveries of daily and weekly newspapers or get a neighbour to clear your post box
- Ensure that all doors and windows are properly closed when leaving the house and at night when going to sleep
- Make sure all panic buttons are in working order
- Be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles
- Do not open gates and doors for strangers
- Verify the details of anyone before you employ them and check the authenticity of a contractor before you allow access to your premises
- While driving, keep checking your rear-view mirror. If you sense you are being followed, circle the block. If your follower persists, drive to the nearest police station or phone for help
- Keep your doors locked and windows closed at intersections
- Keep cellphones, handbags, laptops and briefcases out of sight at all times
- When approaching home, make sure there are no suspicious loiterers or vehicles near your gate
Sibeko also offered the following tips for victims of crime:
- Comply, remain calm and do not argue with perpetrators of crime
- Do not make sudden gestures
- Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the perpetrator looks like by identifying and remembering special features
- Try and get away safely from the area as quickly as possible.
