Join the challenging Pirates 21k reverse run for a cause

Race organisers expect around 500 runners on the day as this is a run event without marshals, no road closures, no timing and no medals.

Local runners are invited to challenge themselves to complete the Pirates 21k reverse run on May 22.

Pirates Road Running chair Gerry Greyling said the event had been held as a regular club run ever since the original Pirates 21k event 44 years ago, causing participants to enter into a debate about which event was more difficult.

In 2018, the Pirates decided to open up the event to other clubs to join the runners in raising funds for the Pirates Development Fund which supports the Pirates Squad. This is a group of talented runners who are passionate about running but cannot afford to travel to elite races around the country to compete against their peers, and covers their running kit, entrance fees, accommodation and travel costs. The squad has 12 members who belong to the fund.

Greyling described the run route saying, “The course is as hilly as the conventional Pirates 21k, but has more of a gradual long climb early into Northcliff with steep downhills and a long, slow descent back into Greenside.

Race organisers expect about 500 runners on the day as this is a run event without marshals, no road closures, no timing and no medals.

Runners can look forward to the good old-fashioned Pirates hospitality as well as a few water tables along the route. However, runners were encouraged to carry their own water if they were able to.

Prams and dogs on leashes are also welcome.

Tickets cost a minimum donation of R90 or R150 which includes a T-shirt.
