Michael Mount celebrates its Greek Games Day with Grade 6’s

BRYANSTON – Michael Mount Waldorf School shows Grade 6 learners how history played a huge role in the modern day society by re-enacting the Ancient Olympic Games

Michael Mount Waldorf School hosted its Grade 6 Greek Games Day after having a two-year period of silence due to the presence and regulations of Covid-19.

The school, situated in Bryanston, welcomed learners and spectators to their annual prestige competition. The competition offered Grade 6 learners an opportunity to have fun and learn through performing various ancient Olympic Games activities.

Before the start of the games on February 25, each learner was assigned to represent one of the three Greek city-states – Athens, Corinth or Sparta. Competitions such as running, javelin, discus, long-distance, high jump and wrestling were the main activities that learners had to compete in during the tournament. The grand entrance ceremony with the lighting of the flame paid homage to the Greek tradition just moments before the games began.

“The focus of the tournament is on the harmony of form, the dynamics of movement, and the potential to increase each child’s own individual level of performance,” said the school’s marketing and communications representative Christina Seuffert on the purpose of the tournament.

The school organised a traditional Greek banquet at the end of the tournament to celebrate the achievements of all the learners that participated in the games.
