55 teams compete at St John’s Basketball Tournament

HOUGHTON – The school was excited to have so many teams and spectators back at the event after a much smaller non-spectator event last year.

The 2022 St John’s College Basketball Tournament saw 55 teams and over 800 players compete during the mid-term break from February 24 to 27.

The school was excited to have so many teams and spectators back at the event after a much smaller non-spectator event last year.

All 55 teams competed in a round-robin before progressing to the knockout stages. The event saw 11 U13 teams, 20 U15 teams and 24 U19 teams compete.

In the U15 category, St Stithians Boys’ won its game against St John’s College scoring 38–33 to secure their spot in the final against Michael Mount, who won their game against Pretoria Boys 31–22.

In the U19 category semi-finals, St John’s College was defeated by St Alban’s College with a final score of 28–15. The second U19 semi-final saw a fierce contest between KwaZulu-Natal rivals St Charles College who triumphed over Northwood School 21–17.

An afternoon highveld storm paused the tournament, interrupting the U13 final between Pridwin Preparatory and St Benedict’s Preparatory. By 16:00, there was still no sign of the lightning all-clear, resulting in a decision to call off the tournament.

St Stithians Boys’ was due to meet Michael Mount Waldorf School in the U15 final and defending titleholder St Alban’s College was ready to face off against St Charles in the U19 final.

St John’s College made the decision to award all age-group finalists as co-winners. In the U19 category, winners were St Alban’s College and St Charles College. In the U15 group, Michael Mount Waldorf and St Stithians Boys’ College walked away with the win, while in the U13 group Pridwin Prep and St Benedict’s Prep won the competition.

Executive headmaster Stuart West said, “What a joy it was to see basketball teams competing on our courts with passion, spirit and true competitiveness. Sadly, the final games could not take place due to the storm on Sunday afternoon, but we thank and salute all the teams and players for another wonderful St John’s College Basketball Tournament.”
