Parkview Saps conduct school safety campaign

GREENSIDE – Social crime prevention coordinator Iris Phoko and the Parkview CPF invited motivational speaker Welcome Witbooi to share his story with learners.

Parkview police together with the Parkview Community Policing Forum (CPF) visited Greenside High and Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg on March 3 for a school safety awareness campaign.

Social crime prevention coordinator Iris Phoko and the Parkview CPF invited motivational speaker Welcome Witbooi to share his story with learners.

Witbooi said he became a gangster at age 12 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison for armed robbery at age 17. He only served 14 years behind bars. He shared his experience with the learners, warning them about the dangers of gangsterism.

The spokesperson for Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said school-based crime prevention was intended to promote safe and orderly school environments.

Sibeko said, “School safety is often a critical obstacle to learning. Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community and schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation.”

Sibeko said the Department of Basic Education in partnership with SAPS was committed to preventing, managing and responding to incidents of crime and violence in schools. “Prevention and early intervention are the most reliable and cost-effective ways to support schools in consistently delivering teaching and learning in an environment that is physically and socially safe.”
