Locals raise funds and awareness for Foundation at Midmar Mile

PARKTOWN – Community members are still urged to support the important work of the foundation through financial and in-kind donations.

Three people and one bear took part in the Midmar Mile on February 12 in support of the Teddy Bear Foundation.

Elvira Wood, her 17-year-old son Jason Wood, Robyn Merry and Bindi the Bear traversed the waters in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the foundation which works with abused children in Parktown.

Speaking to the Gazette regarding the efforts of the swimmers, the foundation’s donor liaison officer Dalene Bishop said, “Elvira always attracts publicity and this year managed to win a bronze medal in her category, ensuring that Bindi and she were featured on the podium.”

So far, the team has collected R600 for the cause and a number of items that will be donated to families who are supported by the foundation.

Community members are still urged to support the important work of the foundation through financial and in-kind donations.

The foundation works to support abused children through medical examinations, forensic assessment, therapy and court preparation. All of these cost R18 940 per child.

Bishop explained, “Money is always in great need in order for us to provide services as we do not charge any of the children or their families for services.”

Bishop said since the arrival of Covid-19, more and more families have been left destitute with food items in great demand.

“The toiletries that we give to our children are as precious to them as gold. The sanitary items also ensure that they will not miss school when they are menstruating.”

Community members are encouraged to contribute items such as soft toys, colouring books and crayons, play dough, cooking oil, maize meal, pasta, rice, tinned fish, baked beans, soup packets, small packets of samp and soya mince, cold drinks, peanut butter, jam, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lip balm, bath soap, body lotion and sanitary towels.

To donate, contact Dalene at daleneb@ttbc.org.za or call her on 083 469 9196.
