Play it forward

GREENSIDE – Locals are invited to donate kit for soccer, netball, cricket and other sports.

Donations of used sporting gear can make a huge difference to people in underprivileged communities.

This is the message behind the Play it forward Jozi team who work to collect old sports gear from the privileged to give to communities and teams in need.

Administrator for Play it Forward Jozi, Alison Garrett explained that the group was formed when her son Ross and a few of his friends got together in primary school after seeing another cricket team sharing the same kit at a match they played.

“They decided to donate their old kit to the team to help them out. They then decided to start the charity to continue helping others,” said Alison.

Locals are invited to donate kits and equipment for soccer, netball, cricket and other sports.

Donation boxes are situated at Pirates Sports Club, VAG Spec Randburg, the Northern Suburbs Tennis Club in Parkwood, Sports Republic on the St Stithian’s campus and other locations by arrangement. “We believe that sport unites communities and people. Most of the time, people connect on the sports field even if they do not speak the same language,” Garrett concluded.

The charity is often in need of soccer kits including boots and soccer balls among other sporting gear.
