Five learners from four schools were honoured for participating in the Junior Commissioners Project at Bramley Police Station on February 9.
Learners from Summit College, Liberty Community School, Hyde Park High and Sandton View Combined School were amongst those who were honoured with certificates and R500 vouchers from PNA Stationers.
Spokesperson for the station Captain Molefe Mogodi explained that the learners were selected based on a number of criteria and graded based on how they handled a number of mock policing scenarios.
Station commander for Bramley police Colonel Owen King said the police looked for learners with good general knowledge, confidence and good presentation skills to make up the five Junior Commissioner spots. “We really appreciate their participation and the guidance of their parents and educators,” said King.
Mogodi said the five selected learners were wise in their handling of various pretend policing scenarios.
King said the Junior Commissioner Project helped to develop a good relationship between learners and police and help learners understand the expectations of community members as partners with police.
Grade 10 learner Angelique Naidoo of Sandton View Combined School said she was excited to join the Junior Commissioner Project since it helped her to showcase her debating skills.
“It was a nice journey to be part of. We had to say what we would do to reduce crimes such as theft and vandalism in schools. I was excited to be selected as part of the top five learners and realised the importance of teamwork in solving crimes,” said Angelique.
King also thanked the Lowndesgate Body Corporate for their sponsorship of the R500 PNA gift vouchers which were presented to the five learners.
