Inspirational community member appeals for help

CRAIGHALL – Ngwenya thanks God that he is alive, despite the circumstances.

A former full-time employee at The Video Spot in Craighall has appealed for community support after a horrific taxi accident left him injured in 2020.

Lucky Ngwenya said he was on the way to work one day using a taxi in June 2020 when the taxi hit the pavement and rolled twice.

“I couldn’t move my arms or legs,” he explained, saying that part of his body was trapped inside the vehicle following the impact.

His spinal cord was injured and he was transferred to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he later woke up in ICU. At this stage, he was declared a quadriplegic.

In August that year, Ngwenya was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Tshwane for physiotherapy where he was later released in November 2020.

He has since regained the use of his arms but remains in a wheelchair.

Ngwenya thanked God that he was alive, despite the circumstances.

“At first, when I saw how I was, I thought I should have died. Now, I keep positive for my four kids and try to live a normal life. Even if you are in a wheelchair, you don’t have to look down on yourself. I need to accept what has happened.”

He works at The Video Spot on Saturdays where he interacts with customers who have become like family to him.

“Coming here on a Saturday helps to keep me going. The community here have helped me to pay my rent and paid for groceries and donated items for my children. Without them, I don’t know where I would be today. Because of them I can stay positive.”

Owner of The Video Spot Stephen Hugo described Ngwenya as an inspirational man who was very important to the shop’s community.

“A lot of people have known him over the years and the support in donations and parcels has been amazing. I hope we can get him into a local rehab which can help him walk again one day,” said Hugo.

Ngwenya appealed for support in the form of work as a salesman or using his typing skills. Financial donations were also requested until he had received assistance from the Road Accident Fund.
