Stolen lights and fallen tree a sore sight

NORWOOD – Owner of a contracted security company clarified that the affected section at Paterson Park is the responsibility of City Parks.

The owner of a private security company recently opened a case of stolen lights at the Norwood Police Station. Simon Ramara, who owns Khaume Security, said he discovered five lights stolen in the park on January 24.

Ramara said he was contracted by Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) on a stipend to look after a section of the park and the other section where the lights were stolen is under the care of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo House.

“Today (January 24) I came into the park and wanted to check if the park was alright and that’s when I discovered that the five lights, out of nine, were gone,” said Ramara.

”So, I contacted City Parks and told them the lights were stolen. The lights this side are supposed to be looked after by the City Parks security but that is not happening.”

He added that with the lights gone, it was easier for criminals to lurk in the dark park and attack park users. He had also informed City Parks that they have had to close the toilets at the park because people vandalise them. “If they (City of Johannesburg) can fix them, we will get women from this very community to volunteer to clean the toilets and maybe as time goes on, the City could give them a stipend.

“Because there is no one who looks after the City Parks side of the park, we have no guarantee that even when the missing lights are replaced, there will be no one to steal them again. I am a small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME) security company and I have been asking City Parks to give us the job so that we can assist people around the area who are not working.”

Ramara had also contacted City Parks to report a huge fallen tree.

City Parks was contacted on January 25 and had promised to revert after consultation. Upon a follow-up on January 31, spokesperson Jenny Moodley said, “The team is still on-site attending to the issues and will revert once the work is concluded.”
