Business owners warned about the circulation of counterfeit notes

ORANGE GROVE – During the search by police, they recovered R800 in fake notes in the suspect’s possession.

Norwood police warn business owners about the circulation of counterfeit notes.

This after officers arrested a suspect found in possession of counterfeit notes to the value of R900.

Spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station Sergeant Eric Masotsha said on January 26 at about 14:00, a male suspect went to a restaurant on Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove, and tried to buy an item using a R100 fake note for payment.

Masotsha said when the cashier inspected the note and realised that it was fake, the suspect ran away along Louis Botha Avenue towards the Hospice shops.

“A chase ensued until the suspect was arrested by community members and was taken back to the business where he was trying to buy using the fake notes,” said Masotsha.

Police were called to the scene for a formal arrest. During the search by police, they recovered R800 in fake notes in the suspect’s possession.

“When the suspect was asked about where he received the money, he failed to give a valid explanation to police.”

Masotsha added that an investigation was underway to discover whether this was a syndicate in operation.

The suspect was detained at Norwood Police Station and displayed no visible injuries.

He appeared before a court of law where his matter was postponed. Bail was opposed.

Masotsha thanked the Orange Grove residents who did not take the law into their own hands, saying that the police condemned mob justice.

Community members are urged to report crime to the Norwood Police Station on 011 483 4609/14 or on Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
