Public thanked for reporting act of animal cruelty

SYDENHAM – General Manager at the Sandton SPCA Meg Wilson said that a woman was seen walking around Sydenham in the heat with five puppies in a closed tog bag and the mother on a lead.

Sandton SPCA relies on the public to report any animal cruelty or neglect.

This call comes after Sandton SPCA was alerted to a disturbing incident.

General manager at Sandton SPCA Meg Wilson said a woman was seen walking around Sydenham in the heat with five puppies in a closed tog bag and the mother on a lead.

“Inspector Obed Mohlala was dispatched to the scene where this was confirmed,” said Wilson.

The woman claimed that the animals had been donated to her by a member of the public.

“While addressing the owner of the dogs, the owner became hostile and inspector Mohlala contacted the SAPS and CAP for assistance.”

Police restrained the owner so that Mohlala could intervene and take the dog and her puppies to a place of safety.

The dogs were then transported to Sandton SPCA Clinic and seen by a vet.

Wilson said the owner of the dogs had come to Sandton SPCA numerous times, offering different addresses and no solid proof of residence.

“She has become hostile towards the staff as well as myself and we have had to have her escorted off the property by security.”

The dog and her puppies are currently in safe care at the SPCA.

Wilson explained that it was in contravention of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 to confine any animal under such conditions or in such a manner as to cause that animal unnecessary suffering or in a place that affords them inadequate ventilation.

“It was also extremely hot on the day and the animals appeared to be distressed. We would like to thank the member of the public that reported this matter. We have a huge area to cover and cannot be everywhere at once. We rely on the public to be our eyes and ears and to report any cruelty or neglect so that we can intervene.”

Members of the public are urged to call Sandton SPCA on 011 444 7730 to report such incidents.
