Matriculants focus on positivity

LINKSFIELD – No learning barriers could stop these two learners from obtaining distinctions in their matric results.

Having barriers in learning could not have been easy for two learners who however obtained five and six distinctions each.

At the age of six, Talia Gingell’s parents were advised that she should attend a remedial school as she had auditory processing difficulties and struggled to socialise with her peers. She indeed went to a remedial school where she was given the opportunity to learn and grow at her own pace.

“When I completed Grade 7, I had the grit and confidence to start my high school career at King David High School, Linksfield. My teachers gave me a lot of support to overcome my difficulties and to help me succeed. My friends have also always been a great support and source of motivation, during my high school years, especially during Covid-19,” Gingell, who obtained five distinctions, shared.

She added that she felt very fortunate for the opportunity to take a gap year to Israel. When she returns to South Africa, she hopes to study for a business degree.

Benjamin Kallner, who achieved six distinctions, said his family and the support system around him kept him going during difficult and negative times. “The negativity mainly came from myself, when I felt that something was too difficult or that I wouldn’t succeed in what I was doing then I would lose confidence in myself and that would impact my work ethic and my will to improve and learn. But my family and teachers were always very supportive and continuously reminded me that I had the ability to succeed and they really helped me with my self-confidence.”

After matric, Kallner said he will be taking a gap year and going on a student programme to Israel with his friends.
