Join the Wise Wildies Hike
HOUGHTON – Kennedy Welani Tembo started the walks five years ago as a way of giving back to the community.
Young and old are invited to join the Wise Wildies Hike at The Wilds Nature Reserve on Tuesdays from 9:00.
The walks are arranged by local community member Kennedy Welani Tembo.
He started the walks five years ago as a way of giving back to the community.
“I thought, what were the senior citizens doing in their spare time when just around their neighbourhood, they had this incredibly beautiful 40-acre park,” said Tembo.
After reading about James Delaney, who worked to rehabilitate the park with community support, in the Gazette, Tembo wondered how he could help.
“I love outdoors and hiking so it came as a no-brainer in creating the Senior Citizens Hike, which more recently changed its name to the Wise Wildies Hike.
“This is the best experience that I have curated and the most fulfilling and rewarding.”
While the hikes are geared for senior citizens, people of all ages are welcome to join as long as they keep to the group’s amble pace.
The walk begins at 9:00 at the main car park on Houghton Drive and continues until noon, covering about 5km.
There is no charge and no pre-booking is required.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times and owners must bring along poop bags.
The hike will be cancelled when the ground is wet and when it is raining.
