Excellent results delight Roedean

PARKTOWN – A lot of hard work went into the excellent results achieved by matriculants at Roedean School.

Roedean School (SA) in Parktown was in full celebratory mood after achieving a 100% matric pass rate.

Acting executive head Linda Galanakis said, “We are exceptionally proud of the results this year as we had 79 learners write the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exams and we had 338 distinctions from those learners which equates to 4.3 distinctions per learner.

“What we are particularly delighted about is the number of learners who worked really hard but were not necessarily top achievers but achieved to their potential and beyond. Many of these learners were not only academic but were all-rounders.”

“A huge thank you goes to the teachers from Grade 0 all the way to matric for their incredible input into these learners’ abilities, drive and effort. We can’t leave out the parents who have put their trust in us as well as their contribution and support to the school,” Galanakis said.

Gamlath Senarathne, who ranked in the top 5% of IEB learners in six or more subjects and achieved eight distinctions, said she took part in many extra-curricular activities. “I also represented South Africa nationally at an International First Aid competition through my Model United Nations (MUN) involvement. I am happy to report that after an assignment where we did a project about solar panels and we proposed it to the school, all the new buildings that Roedean brings forward will have solar panels going forward,” Senarathne said.

Aaliyah Noorbhai who ranked in the top 5% of IEB learners in five or more subjects, attained eight distinctions and more than a 90% aggregate, said there were a lot of challenges, especially with Covid-19. “It was hard to keep up the morale but I worked hard throughout the year and I tried my best to always be consistent and study even when it was hard. Supportive teachers made it a lot easier and I surrounded myself with a great support system,” she said.

Another learner, Rachel Guise-Brown through her involvement with MUN was part of a group of youths who documented a climate action policy that became part of the official City of Johannesburg official Climate Action policy. She was also part of Round Square; which she described as an international organisation embracing different schools that work together based on ideals of internationalism, leadership, environment and more. “It’s about being involved in not just academics but community issues. I received the King Constantine Medal for my contributions to the Round Square at Roedean,” Guise-Brown said.
