Local matrics to study abroad and return to SA

HOUGHTON – Sazi Bongwe was accepted into Harvard University in mid December, while classmate Lwandle Ntshangase was accepted at Oxford University in early January.

Two St John’s College matrics have received early acceptance to study at world-class universities abroad.

Sazi Bongwe was accepted into Harvard University in mid-December, while classmate Lwandle Ntshangase was accepted at Oxford University in early January.

Speaking to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, Bongwe said he hopes to study economics, government or social studies.

“I’m interested in economic development in the South African context and hope to use this degree to work in poverty eradication in South Africa,” said Bongwe.

He hopes to pursue a career in government or an institution running adjacent to the government in South Africa and has an interest in policy.

He is adamant that he will return to South Africa after completing his studies since he believes that it is our responsibility to fix South Africa’s problems.

He hopes to complement his former classmates who will study locally by providing a unique, global perspective to local issues.

“Ultimately, we can bring about the best solutions by working together. South Africa is home and I hope to come back and do something significant here.”

Bongwe advises learners hoping to be accepted at Harvard to be genuine in their application.

“I worked hard in my application to be my authentic self and it gives me great personal gratification to know that they accepted me. Be kind to yourself in the process,” said Bongwe.

Ntshangase will be studying law at Oxford. He was pleased to see his acceptance as recognition of his hard work.

He advises the Class of 2022 to not be daunted by the prospect of matric, but rather continue to consistently put in the effort in order to achieve good results.
