MMC of Public Safety David Tembe encourages residents and motorists to be extremely cautious as heavy rainfall can be expected to continue throughout the week.
According to the councillor, continuous heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding in residential areas and roads. “A flash flood is when a low-lying area or location experiences a rapid influx of rainwater or heavy downpours over a short period.”
In the event of a flood, members of the community are encouraged to not panic and follow the safety tips below:
Flooding for residents:
- If you are in a low-lying area, immediately evacuate to higher ground
- Keep away from power lines and the use of electrical equipment
- Children should not play in stormwater drains or ditches.
Flooding in cars:
- Do not panic
- Never drive through a flooded road or bridge
- Evacuate a car caught in rising water
- Heed road closure warnings.
