2022 will be a year of rebuilding, Clr Tim Truluck

PARKHURST – Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck hopes to see true change in the new year, after a challenging 2021.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck does not wax lyrical when he describes 2021.

He told the Gazette it had been an incredibly challenging year, essentially an extension of 2020, and that Covid-19’s prevalence had coloured the way he and his team did everything.

“WhatsApp and social media have been the saving grace in allowing us to communicate, not just with immediate team members, but with residents’ associations and other officials,” he said, explaining that in 2020 they had learned skills that made this year’s meetings and communication easier.

He said the surge in Covid-19 cases at the beginning of the year and then mid-year had meant existing problems within the community had had to be dealt with in ‘safe’, strategic ways. Furthermore, there were the elections which he said took up a lot of time and required new ways of campaigning and reaching communities.

He added he and his team’s focus this year included attending to the deterioration of services and mobilising repair teams, which he said had been difficult as a result of few team members being available to meet on site and attend to these problems. “There have also been issues around resource availability.”

He said last year, R4 million was ploughed into the upgrade of the Parkhurst Recreation Centre, and this was then used as a vaccination centre this year. “The highlight of my year was receiving the vaccine,” he said.

He believed 2022 would be a year where the focus would be on rebuilding. “We will focus on mobilising the community and stepping up efforts to restore Johannesburg. We were a City of Gold but have become a City of Bronze. It’s time to get our gloss back.”

He hoped residents would take the opportunity to rest and recharge, ready to come into 2022 with all guns ablaze.
