Volunteers pave the way

DELTA PARK – Volunteers construct much-needed bridges and lay brick pathways.

The Delta Park Users Group has constructed new bridges and brick pathways that were sorely needed.

The volunteers are funded by community members who use the park and their leader, Shirley Tebbutt, explained that the past few months have been very busy. “The biggest project was this one new wooden bridge,” she said.

“The problem was the erosion under the [old] bridge that was undermining its foundations. The riverbed is almost a metre deeper than it was 10 years ago and the outward corners of the banks, which took the force of the water during a storm, was undermining the edges where the bridge was resting.”

Wooden planks and two truckloads of rocks were donated for the gabion cages and local civil engineer Tom Harrison helped with constructing the bridge.

Stone tables and chairs were also donated for the playground area, and the users group workers helped pave roads at various entrances.

Tebbutt asked anyone willing to donate money or materials for the upkeep to do so. “I always ask people who use the park if they can spare R50 per month for maintenance, as we have to do everything ourselves.”
