High school continues pursuit of excellent education

LINKSFIELD – The school found a way to continue ‘business as usual’ – with masks and social distancing.

When the second wave of Covid-19 was looming at the beginning of the year, King David High School, Linksfield (KDHL) sought solutions.

“In the true spirit of KDHL, we opened with a self-imposed lockdown to ensure the continuation of our pursuit of an excellent education – in spite of Covid-19,” said principal Lorraine Srage.

She added that assemblies resumed, live-streamed on YouTube by the learners. “This amazing feature also allowed parents, alumni and anyone really interested, a weekly window into the amazing world of KDHL. The regular items by each committee, the message from the rabbi, school news of the week and news from Israel, created a sense of community and belonging,” the principal added.

Srage shared that as soon as the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions allowed, sport at the school took every opportunity to resume its vital function. Supporters, while not invited in person, were included in real-time with live streaming.

“With the introduction of a vaccine to combat Covid-19 in the world, and South Africa rolling out millions of doses; Discovery Health facilitated the vaccination of our teachers by August. We held our own vaccination drive, where our matriculants in September and the rest of the school by the end of October, had the opportunity to be vaccinated on campus,” Srage said.

She added that this year marked a significant milestone for her as it is her 40th year at the school. From physical education and history teacher, to head of department, to the academic head and finally principal. “I feel so privileged to have been able to be such an integral part of this incredible school for the past 40 years.”

She added that it was, however, sadly the passing of Elliot Wolf who was an icon and had been principal of the school for 28 years.

“King David has grown and moved with the times. It is a vehicle for individual, professional and personal growth. As we bid farewell to 2021, we look forward to a healthier, hopefully, Covid-free, 2022,” Srage concluded.
