Mbongeni Ngema passes baton to youth

MELROSE ARCH – Attendees can join in the festivities from December 3.

What better way to usher in festivities than through celebrations with legendary musician, writer and philanthropist Dr Mbongeni Ngema.

Ngema recently shared his plans for his upcoming Mbongeni Ngema Legacy Concert to be held at The Venue in Melrose Arch.

Emcee at the press briefing, Harmony Mbele shared that the icon’s career spanned more than 40 years. “The globally acclaimed and locally celebrated musician, composer, playwright, and philanthropist opened his Legacy Tour as the first-ever artist to host a residency at The Venue.

The residency serves as the launch of a much-anticipated homecoming musical experience which will culminate into a national and continental tour,” Mbele expounded.

He added that the man who had done so much for South African storytelling had a lot in store for the festivities from December 3 to the new year. The icon has written and produced the musical Sarafina! been nominated for a Grammy award and worked with the likes of Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder.

Marketing manager for The Venue Nana Malinga said, ‘We are proud to announce Mbongeni Ngema’s residency at The Venue. This residency will be taking place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from December 3 till 2022 with great festivities of musical theatre.”

Dr Khomoetsile Moetse of the Black Pearls Foundation said the celebrations came at an interesting time of celebrating 16 Days of Activism. “My personal message is that we need to be authentic and honest about issues we’re facing today. In this day and age what we need most is unity, understanding and celebration more than anything. So, what better way to celebrate than through music.

“When we were invited to partner with the Mbongeni Ngema Legacy, we looked beyond everything else and saw it necessary to reflect on lessons taught by this legend’s music, we saw the jobs being created, we saw it as an opportunity for unity and a platform to empower women. Proceeds from the concert will go to projects based on fighting gender-based violence [GBV].”

Ngema said the purpose of the concert was to stimulate the minds of the youth considering the many issues that bothered them such as GBV.

“I am happy that I will be working with young people once more and passing on the baton of knowledge to them,” Ngema said.
