Local school finish second at the Junior Inter-High Tennis tournament

PARKVIEW – The tournament is played by the top schools in the Gauteng area and there are generally 25 schools that participate.

After a stellar performance in the Junior Inter-High Tennis competition on October 26, the Parktown High School for Girls junior tennis team earned a second-place overall accolade.

Due to Covid-19, this year’s tournament had a slightly different structure in order to reduce the number of players moving between venues. As a result, all teams played at the same venue for the full day and played their games in the afternoon instead of all day.

“Usually, the tournament consists of multiple venues with six schools per site. All the schools will play each other in a round-robin format, and from there, depending on how they played, they will go to another venue to play other schools who have qualified,” explained Catherine McCreesh, director of sports at the school.

The Inter-High Tennis Tournament is played by the top schools in Gauteng. About 25 schools take part in it each year. This year, all schools participated in the round-robin tournament playing doubles at the Parktown High School for Girls, and small prizes were awarded.

Girls from Parktown High School for Girls were awarded second place medals for their stellar performance throughout the tournament.

McCreesh concluded, “Our girls’ doubles skills have improved so much this year and it is evident that they enjoy playing together, which is the key to winning.

“We were very pleased with how the girls performed on the day. The games were more enjoyable when they played doubles, as there is less pressure and more fun. Our doubles partners had a particularly special bind which makes them fierce to play against.”
