Learner escapes armed suspect

LYNDHURST – Sandringham SAPS have however confirmed a case of attempted kidnapping and attempted robbery opened.

A case of attempted kidnapping and attempted robbery has been opened at Sandringham Police Station.

A spokesperson for the station Warrant Officer Aaron Lebuso confirmed the opening of the case and added that this was after a Sandringham High School learner had allegedly experienced the ordeal on her way to school on November 19.

Community Active Protection (CAP) shared a detailed statement and maintained that it was not an attempted kidnapping but an attempted armed robbery. The police are, however, investigating the incident as an attempted kidnapping and attempted robbery.

CAP’s statement said the learner was walking to school on Swemmer Road, Lyndhurst, to write an examination while listening to music with headphones on.

It stated that a vehicle approached her from the opposite direction, and a single male suspect armed with a firearm exited from the front passenger door ran towards her and lunged at her. ‘The girl saw the suspect, stepped away and fled. When we spoke to her, she confirmed that no contact was made, and this is corroborated by the CCTV footage. The suspect fell when the victim stepped away, and then returned to the vehicle [which sped away],’ read the statement.

‘Our teams will work with the SAPS to identify and find the suspects involved. We encourage all community members to please not carry valuables when walking, if possible, walk-in groups, be vigilant, and report any suspicious vehicles.’
