Girls urged to ‘own up their thrones’

COSMO CITY – The products in their sanitary kits were sponsored by Victor Soap Industries, Towel Warehouse, National Pride and North Rand Methodist Church.

Young girls are educated on menstrual hygiene and the different ways of standing up for themselves.

In honour of the International Day of a Girl, Fourways-based non-profit organisation Sizanani Charity hosted a #DignifyMe sisterhood session with girls aged between 12 and 18 in Cosmo City.

Coordinator of the NPO Asamkele Menzeleli said the campaign aims to eradicate period poverty by providing 2000 young women with sanitary kits for a period of 12 months. They did face funding challenges to achieve this goal but were able to support 50 young girls from Cosmo City.

The young women attended the event and received sanitary kits that consisted of two packs of sanitary towels, a facecloth and a bar of soap. The girls were also given vital lessons on how to stand up for themselves and to see value in themselves.

Menzeleli said, “All the girls who attended the event were encouraged to believe in themselves and to always speak up when they feel that their rights are being violated. To always look in the mirror and affirm themselves in the morning, daily. Lastly, to own up their thrones and embark on this journey of beginning a revolution of a generation of women who are game-changers; rule-makers and great leaders with us.”

The products in their sanitary kits were sponsored by Victor Soap Industries, Towel Warehouse, National Pride and North Rand Methodist Church. Menzeleli concluded, “Through their acts of kindness, we were able to put smiles in the faces of the 50 young girls who attended our event and we will continue putting more smiles on them for 11 more months.”

Sizanani Charity is determined to make a difference in the lives of many other girls and is calling on those willing and able to partner with and support them in whatever way they can.
