Norwood police arrest cellphone thief

ORANGE GROVE – A man was recently arrested in Orange Grove for multiple offences, when drugs and stolen phones and documents were found in his possession.

Norwood police recently arrested a man in Orange Grove, who will appear in court shortly on charges of fraud and drug dealing.

Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said that on November 8, at around 13:40 police were doing routine patrols, undercover and dressed as civilians, when they spotted a suspicious man on 3rd Ave, Orange Grove.

He said the police identified themselves to the man and upon searching him, found him to be in the possession of drugs. They subsequently conducted a search on his property, where they found more drugs, a laptop, different sim cards, a router, five different phones and documents which did not belong to the man.

“The suspect was questioned regarding the whereabouts of the document owners, but was unable to explain how he was in possession of the documents,” said Masotsha.

He said he was then given his notice of rights, and it was explained to him he was under arrest for the dealing of drugs and for fraud.

Masotsha has advised the community to not buy stolen property. “Don’t entertain fraudsters and scammers over the phone.”

He urged people said to be alert at ATMs at all times, and while running on the road as exercise, to avoid becoming the victim of a cellphone snatcher.

Criminal activities can be reported to the Norwood police on 011 483 4609.
