Residents are advised to take note that some of the busiest roads in the city will be closed on November 21 due to the return of the 947 Ride Joburg event.
Previously known as the 947 Cycle Challenge, 947 Ride Joburg returns for its 25th edition, providing the same adrenaline-pumping challenge, but with some exciting changes, including a new start and finish venue at FNB Stadium, and in collaboration with the City of Joburg. Other than last year, the race has taken place every year.
Jan Smuts Avenue will be closed along with 19 other major roads, including the M1 southbound. The ride will be in an anticlockwise direction as it did in 2019. In Ward 117 Region E, the riders will be riding southwards along Jan Smuts Avenue.
Tim Truluck, councillor for Ward 117, urges residents not to ‘fight the race’ as every year, residents, visitors, taxi and e-hailing drivers, and businesses get stuck in the race. “This year, plan accordingly. Plan your Sunday morning around the closure. Go and watch or cheer on the riders, sponsor one of the teams and embrace it,” Truluck said.
Due to the event’s length, certain roads throughout greater Johannesburg will be closed at varying times between 03:00 and 17:00 by the JMPD, JRA, Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, and the City of Johannesburg.
There is an interactive online map that will help residents navigate their way around the closures.
